Alternative Septic Systems: Types, Costs, and Which One Your Property Needs

A conventional septic tank works on most properties — but not all. When soil fails a perc test, the water table is too high, or a lot is too small, an alternative system is required. Here's what each type costs and how to know which one your property actually needs.

This higher-quality effluent can be dispersed in smaller drain fields or on sites where conventional systems would pose a contamination risk.

Aerobic systems are often required on lots near surface water, on small lots with limited soil area, or in areas with strict groundwater protection requirements. They require electricity, quarterly maintenance contracts, and more frequent attention than any other system type.

3. Chamber System

A chamber system replaces the traditional gravel-and-pipe drain field with a series of open-bottomed plastic arch chambers buried in the soil. Wastewater flows from the septic tank into the chambers, where it comes into direct contact with the soil through the open bottom and perforated sides. Chamber systems have a larger infiltrative surface area than gravel systems, making them suitable for sites with slower soil absorption rates.

Chamber systems are often used when gravel is expensive or difficult to source, on sites with variable soil, or when a shallower installation depth is needed. They're one of the more cost-effective alternatives in many markets.

The filtered effluent is then pumped to a conventional or reduced-area drain field.

Sand filters come in two forms: open (above-ground, requiring odor management) and closed (buried, minimal odor). They're commonly used when soil conditions require enhanced treatment before final dispersal, but a full aerobic system isn't required.

6. Constructed Wetland System

A constructed wetland system treats wastewater by passing it through a shallow bed of gravel planted with wetland vegetation. Constructed wetlands are one of the most environmentally integrated options — and when properly designed, they blend into the landscape.

These systems are less common in California's Central Valley due to hot, dry summers that stress wetland vegetation. They're most often seen in areas with year-round moisture availability and where regulatory agencies have experience permitting them.

Alternative systems have higher annual operating costs than conventional systems. An aerobic system costs $400–$800 per year in mandatory maintenance contracts alone. Frequently Asked Questions About Alternative Septic Systems

Can I upgrade from a conventional system to an alternative system?

Yes. If your conventional drain field is failing and soil conditions or site constraints prevent installing a replacement conventional field, you can upgrade to an alternative system. This is common when properties have been developed further over time — adding bedrooms, accessory dwelling units, or hardscape — and the original system is now undersized or the site is more constrained.
